Bradley Indoor

One thing Purdue Triathlon excels at is scheduling indoor races on the nicest weekends of the winter. Despite it being 55+ outside, Patrick M, Kevin S, Brian L, Zach S, Cameron D, and I took on the Bradley Indoor this past weekend in Peoria, IL. Patrick put in great work in keeping with future draft legal competitors on the bike and run, so we can’t wait to see what happens next time they meet in Tuscaloosa. Kevin was thoroughly impressed with the pre/post-race snack assortment at his 2nd race of the season, “10/10 would eat there again,” and had another solid showing. This was Cameron’s first indoor race, and even after finishing in the top half of the men’s rankings, still prefers outdoor races (don’t we all). Zach, Brian, and I had our first ever triathlons at Bradley, and even though vets prefer the outdoor races, indoors are definitely a great introduction to the sport (especially if you don’t have a bike) and are awesome for qualifying for Nationals.
Since it was our racing debut, we figured we’d leave some tips for the other newbies out there so you don’t make the same mistakes we did.
Figure out how you’re going to handle the transition ahead of time.
Know how to get from the pool to the bike to the swim. Locker room layouts can be weird and it’s not fun wasting time trying to figure out how to get out of one.
Know how much time you’re going to have. They changed our swim to bike transition from 10 minutes to 5, which was lots of fun and we all totally made it to the bikes on time.
Know how the bike works.
Set the seat to the right height.
Make sure the distance starts recording when you hit start because sometimes you’re supposed to hit it twice but you don’t and miss out on a couple minutes of distance.
Read the buttons before you press them so you don’t accidentally reset your distance.
Have some way to keep track of time.
Check the area for a clock before you race.
If there isn’t a big, bright-red clock like in our CoRec, remember to have your watch or friend yelling the time at you.
Always chapstick in transition. This one came to us from Patrick as he dubbed it a classic Rookie Mistake.
If you haven’t raced yet, do it. You’d be surprised what you’re capable of even if you don’t go to practice every single day.
That’s all for now, have a killer week everyone.
